Community Mentoring Program
What we do today makes a BIG difference tomorrow.
What if…
- Every child fulfills their potential?
- Every child is set on the right path today?
- Every child in Canada finishes high school, goes to college or university, gets a job and gives back to their community?
Wouldn’t that be something?
Become a Big Brother Big Sister in the Community Mentoring Program and have some fun!
The Big Brothers Big Sisters program provides boys/girls and young men/women a role model and a friend to talk to and share the experiences of growing up with. Through regular outings, a relationship is developed between the mentor and the mentee, that is built on trust and common interests and is supported by our experienced caseworkers. The result is a life-changing experience for both the mentor and the mentee.
The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring program usually requires one regularly scheduled outings a week, of 2-3 hours each, with a minimum of 1-year commitment.
The program strives to do the following:
- Provide a role model and a friend for boys/girls and young men/women.
- Promote the importance of staying in school and healthy relationships with family and peers.
- Instill trust and self-confidence in order to make healthy decisions.
- Encourage leadership skills and independent thinking.
- And above all, make a difference while having fun.
Additional Information
There are always children in Weyburn waiting for a Big Brother Big Sister, so we encourage you to apply today. After the enrollment process, we’ll provide training and match you with a Little Brother Little Sister, who shares your interests. It’s up to you and your Little Brother Little Sister to decide when to get together, and what you do! You could go hiking, biking, play video games, watch a movie, listen to music, or cook! Little Brothers and Little Sisters are always willing to try new activities and learn new skills. Come up with a list, and try new things together!
Most often than not matches are having so much fun that they continue even after the one year mark. Currently, the average length for a match is 2.5 years. Not only does volunteering benefit the child but the volunteers as well. Studies show that 81% of volunteers mentoring children are more optimistic about their lives.
Little Brothers Little Sisters are great kids anxiously waiting to have fun with someone like you. Their ages range from 6 to 16, and all are excited to be a part of this program. If you’ve ever wanted to be a kid again, your Little Brother Little Sister will be happy to help you out. That’s the magic of the program – you learn from each other. Children who spend time with a mentor gain confidence, acquire new skills and competencies and develop an enhanced capacity to care for others. Mentors experience a sense of discovery and enjoyment as they see the world of possibility open up through a child’s eye.
