WHAT IS BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS?

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada is a Federation comprised of 111 member agencies servicing more than 1000 communities across the country. Each Big Brother Big Sister agency provides direct service to children by matching adults and children in quality mentoring relationships. Our agency staff members are experts at screening volunteers and matching them with a child having similar interests.

The national organization provides services and programs to our member agencies to assist them with their hands-on work with parents, children, and volunteers. Ranging from staff training workshops to our leading Child Safety Program, which includes an emphasis on sexual abuse prevention, BBBSC works diligently to ensure that program quality is superior in all parts of the country.

Our History in Weyburn, Saskatchewan

As Weyburn, Saskatchewan’s leading child and youth mentoring charity, Big Brothers Big Sisters facilitates life-changing relationships that inspire and empower children and youth to reach their potential, both as individuals and citizens.

In 1981 our agency was founded by three social workers who recognized the need for mentorship in our community. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Weyburn was then incorporated in 1982. Since then, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Weyburn has been creating positive, healthy friendships between adults and youth.

In 2000, we implemented the In-School Mentoring program which is currently our fastest growing. 2004 saw the addition of our Big Bunch program, it helps to serve the needs of the children not only on our waiting lists but all those involved in our programs! Our Kids ‘N Kops summer camp has been going strong since 1999, thanks to a rewarding partnership with the Weyburn Police Service.

Our work is to mobilize the incredible power of a consistent positive relationship in the life of each young person. As we build friendships, children, and youth are given a shoulder to lean on, a model to strive for, and someone to cheer them on through the challenges of growing up.

We have a variety of different programs to suit the lifestyles of our volunteers as well as to serve the different needs of children and youth in our community. We are proud of our achievements and continue to strive to be on the leading edge of the Big Brothers Big Sisters movement in Canada.

For both Big and Little, the mentoring experience becomes a life-changing relationship built on friendship, trust, and empowerment.

WHO CAN BE A MENTOR?

You can! Being a Mentor is about being a friend and someone to look up to. It’s about hanging out, talking and sharing, with many smiles along the way. It’s about making one child, feel very special. And you’ll feel pretty great too. After the enrollment process, we’ll provide training and match you with a child who shares your interests. As a mentor, you get to build model airplanes, do crafts, paint or draw, kick around the soccer ball or play football, play on the computer, hang out and much more… whatever! It’s about sharing a little time together. A few hours a week, or every couple of weeks, will make a huge difference.

In this program, we use a mentor approach to provide the boys with information and support to make informed choices about healthy lifestyle practices. Sessions are loosely structured around four themes: physical activity, healthy eating, self-esteem, and communication skills. Click here for more info!
